In Touch HIA West Kent

Who do we help?

Home improvement agencies (HIAs) help older, disabled and vulnerable people repair or adapt their property so they can continue living independently in their own homes. Our advice services are available to people who are private home owners or tenants of private landlords and live in the Sevenoaks, Tonbridge & Malling, Tunbridge Wells, Dartford, Gravesham and Maidstone Borough Council areas. Our other services may also be available to people in other types of housing, please call the agency to check.

What happens?

Your HIA caseworker and a surveyor will visit you at home to talk about what repairs or adaptations you want done and give advice on work needed. They can also assess your personal needs and risks, your home and your finances (including checking you’re getting the right benefits) and, if necessary, find organisations to help with other problems. All advice is provided free of charge.
If you decide you want work to go ahead using HIA services, we will:
  • List any work that needs to be done and get estimates
  • Help you find and apply for funding (Some Local Authorities may be able to provide interest-free home improvement loans for people whose homes need to meet the Decent Homes Standard)
  • Recommend and contact builders, instruct them and sort out payment
  • Check the work while it is being done and after it’s finished
We usually see people within ten days of making an appointment. Please talk to us about our fees for private works.

Fees

Our advice service is free. We charge a fee where technical or practical help is given, ranging from plans and specifications to
supervising the works. This may be covered in any grant awarded through the local authority.

Other Services

  • Handyperson Service – We offer a home repairs and DIY service for older, vulnerable and disabled home owners or private tenants, our hourly rate is just £15.00 per hour including VAT. You will need to pay for any materials that may be required. There is no call out charge for this service. Where appropriate written quotations can be provided for larger projects or jobs.
  • Private works – For your peace of mind you may want us to oversee other building work. We carry out this work based on a sliding scale of charges set by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors
  • Decorating Service – We offer an affordable and professional Decorating Service for domestic properties
  • Gardening Service – We offer a low cost, reliable and trustworthy gardening service for domestic properties
  • Galvanized Handrails – We offer a service to supply and install galvanized handrails to the outside of domestic properties
  • Keysafes – We offer a service to supply and install Keysafes to the outside of domestic properties

Your feedback and involvement

We want to provide an excellent service. You’ll be invited to give feedback on grant and loan works while the work is being done and when it is complete. We’ll also ask you if you would like to join our steering group meetings. Plus we’ll ask for your feedback on the
Handyperson service. Finally we have a grumbles log to document and deal with minor complaints.
